Security Division in the World of Trek
Starfleet Security was an agency in Starfleet. This agency was one of the oldest with its origins dating back to the United Earth Starfleet. The agency was located at Fleet Operations Center in San Francisco, Earth, Sol Sector. The agency was responsible for safeguarding the Federation from internal and external threats, for conducting criminal investigations, and for guarding Federation facilities. (ENT: “Demons“, directories)
In the United Earth Starfleet, the armory officer was in charge of a ship’s security department.
In the 2270s, the role of security chief was combined with that of the chief tactical officer. These officers were also in charge of weapons, shields, and ship security. The chief tactical officer could be a separate position or be combined with that of helmsman or navigator. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture; Star Trek V: The Final Frontier; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
In the 24th century, with helm and navigation consolidated in the new flight controller position, the chief tactical officer fulfilled the role of security chief. (TNG: “Encounter at Farpoint“) Aboard the USS Voyager, Lieutenant CommanderTuvok, as security chief, had thirteen department heads report to him every day on ship’s protocol. (VOY: “Scientific Method“)
Some noted security chiefs in Starfleet history were:
- Lieutenant Malcolm Reed of Enterprise NX-01
- Ensign (later Lieutenant, and later Commander) Pavel Chekov of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) and USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)
- Lieutenant Natasha Yar of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)
- Lieutenant (later Lieutenant Commander) Worf of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) and the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)
- Constable Odo of Deep Space 9 (Bajoran Militia)
- Lieutenant Commander Tuvok of the USS Voyager
A security officer was an officer who worked for Starfleet Security, and was, as such, part of a starship or starbase’s security department, under the command of a Chief of Security.
A security officer’s duties include the protection of Starfleet and Federation assets, the prevention and investigation of crimes, and personal protection of Starfleet officers and Federation or foreign dignitaries.
In the 23rd century, it was customary for landing parties to include a number of security officers as guards.

STARFLEET Security – USS Stargazer NCC 7991
When one of our crew members opted to join the Security Department on board the Gazer, it quickly became apparent that lady security officers were very few and far between.
There is a scene in The Undiscovered Country where Spock is mind melding with Valeris… they are surrounded by a STARFLEET Security detachment – (note their uniforms and shirt colours)… which definitely include females.
Lady security officers are definitely visible in the animated Star Trek – although they do seem to be wearing the very impractical tiny dress uniforms – although it looks like they shoot first and thus avoid the indignity of getting involved in brawling
mmm our Captain is very fond of this approach – despite my best efforts to instill any sense of diplomacy…
The Gazer is set in the era of 2290 this seems to fall somewhere between Security Officer (2267) Giotto (last picture) and Tasha Yar – Security Officer (2364) it is ENTIRELY feasible that lady Security Officers would be wearing the security uniforms as per their male counterparts (as per Giotto)… so the fabled red shirt and trousers with side arms…
As a member of the Security Department on board, a Security Officer duties are varied and cover a wide range of duties that include anything from investigating why the Captains supply of dumplings is dwindling at such an alarming rate, who fed the Tribbles (after midnight), to accompanying the Doc when he and his team trot off on his various scientific recovery missions…
Other duties for our Security Personnel include:
– Ship Control Police
– Honor Guard
– Shore Marshalls
– Special Intelligence
– Special Forces
– Federation and Fleet Penal Personnel
